When this past October 10th rolled around, Mental Health Awareness day had my social media feeds flooding with posts, tweets, quotes. Inspirational, satirical, and everything in between. Poking fun at a society that stigmatizes it's own people improving their mental health, and moving people to stand against the status quo and eliminate those constraints. I'm not going to lie - it got repetitive. Over and over again, the same message in different words. Every repost, retweet, monotonous repetiti...

Every once in a while, it hits me like a ton of bricks. That feeling, sensation, realization that half the words coming out of my mouth are complete garbage. Okay. Maybe a bit of an exaggeration. But definitely unnecessary. You see, when I was little, I would talk from sunrise to sunset - day and night, non stop blabbing. From what my mom says about raising me, I can infer that I annoyed the living crap out of her as a child. But I was only talking, right? I wasn't even saying worth listening t...

I've spent virtually every day of my life lumped into some sort of group. Kid. Nerd. Artist. Writer. Seems pretty harmless. Right? Well, I wasn't finished.Indian. Freak. Outsider. Terrorist. Still harmless? I don't think so (don't worry, I'll get back to that last one).People saw a few of my drawings and said - "oh, she's an artist." They read a few of my essays and presumed - "she's definitely a writer." They saw a few of my test grades and thought - "she must be a genius." People saw the color...

I remember the sharp static on the PA as the lady came on the school announcements. "We are having a lockout. This is not a drill." I remember the shivers running down our spines as we sat huddled on the 'magic carpet.' I remember my mind racing in a million directions as to what could be going on. It was never not a drill. We had no idea what was going on, I remember a few children even cried. I remember our teacher scrolling through her phone, looking for any news updates. Her eyes widened in...

It's a tough question, isn't it? The reasons go back centuries, don't they? The work of our ancestors since the beginning of humanity. They laid down the framework for the utterly insufferable race to follow. But it's been well over 2 million years since the first humans came to be. So why haven't gotten past their ancient views? Why are we still rooted in our old ways? Why don't we have equality yet?Last year in the middle of an average social studies class, I was just about to doze off when my...

Have you ever wondered where the time went? How just yesterday you were playing in your preschool playground and now you're making your way through high school?Strange, Isn't it?Why does time never seem to slow? Why does it only speed, faster and faster until we hit our final stop in the journey that is life? I think that sometimes the journey is so long that we often worry about the road ahead, as opposed to focusing on what is in front of us. That's why sometimes we miss a chance to look at th...

Weird title, I know. Just stick with me.First impressions, one of the most important moments in meeting someone new. They'll get a sense of your personality, your 'aura.' But you want to know something sad? Those all important first impressions, they don't exist anymore. Why? One word.Judgement. When we see someone we judge them. It's been etched into our brains for generations now. A simple characteristic such as one's hair or one's outfit can influence all our opinions of them. They don't need...
