This blog post is a collaboration between Hannah Weytjens and Harsh Mahaseth. Belgium and Nepal are two distinct nations from two different continents. While there are differences between the countries they share an intercontinental bond. This intercontinental bond is the aspiration of culture and development. The Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal is a small landlocked country located between the two emerging/emerged superpowers China and India. As a small nation that has so...

My shoulders hurt. That is because you carry the world on them. What? That is because you carry the world on them. No, I mean they really hurt. I know. Oh. Some say it is not good to carry the world on your shoulder but it is. The problems of the world are your problems and the joy of the world is your joy. It is good that you carry those with you. You should get a wagon. Huh? You can put everything in that wagon and what you need, you take out. A wago...

I came across an event on Facebook that I wanted to share with you. It is something many of my friends are talking about. The event is named ‘uitzwaaidag Islam’ (wave-goodbye-day Islam) and is scheduled from the 15th to the 16th of May 2017, the same day as the elections in the Netherlands. The person who created the event claims that Islam is an intolerant ideology that doesn’t belong in the West. Thus, her plan is to put Islam on a plane to some place that isn’t Europe and she in...

When I first started posting here on VOY, I did not tell anyone. Not my best friends and not my family. I didn’t know why at first. Now I realize it was because I was afraid that people might discover another side of me, an ambitious side. So I wondered, why? Why am I afraid of people knowing that I’m ambitious? I still don’t know the answer to that question. But what I do know is that since I’ve started showing my ambition many people have told me they respect me for it, but even...

A little boy goes to school for the first time. He knows it’s his first day of school because that is what his mom told him but he doesn’t really know what that means. His first day won’t be long: he is just two-and-a-half years old and still has a nap every noon so his mom will pick him up before then. When his dad drops him off at the fence of his new school, the boy cries. A teacher walks towards him and guides him to his classmates. From this moment, he likes school. It’s mainl...

It was Monday 27 June when around five o’clock I got a mail. “Gefeliciteerd, jullie zijn allemaal geslaagd!” which means as much as ‘congratulations, you all passed’. Thrilled, I ran down the stairway and told my mom with a smile stretching past my ears, that no one in my class failed the exams and that it was official now, I had graduated! “Wow cool that everybody passed!” was the only response I got from her. So I decided to text a few of my friends. Half an hour later: some...

The refugee crisis has been dominating the news for quite some time. It is a subject I personally care about thus I wanted to write something on the occasion of World Refugee Day, June 20. While I was trying to figure out what to write I concluded two things: 1. I want to know much about this subject, yet I don’t know anything. 2. I have no clue what the opinions of my friends are. I decided to work with the second point and soon found out that my friends have s...

I could start this post with hello in my mother tongue but the thing is, we say hallo. Not much of a difference so away goes my spectacular first line. I could start with saying my name but the thing is, I’m not really new. I kind of consider myself a regular here on VOY. The only thing that has changed? I’m an intern now -- hurray! So instead, let me tell you a bit about how I see myself. 1. I’m a human living in the world This may seem obvious but it is an essential pa...

‘Instead of dreaming you should act.’ No! Start dreaming, then act. A beautiful Walt Disney quote comes to mind: “If you can dream it, you can do it.” It’s only in dreams that peaceful worlds exist. It’s only in dreams the good always wins from the evil without losing its goodness in the process. It’s only in dreams that tragedies like war, natural disasters, violence, racism, and so on don’t have to exist. It’s in dreams you become the hero to make it happen. I rep...
