So… what defines you? I have a couple of answers ready for that. I’ve written them down countless times. Things that I am good at. Things that I enjoy doing, things that give me a reason to stay alive. I can pull out hundreds of papers answering that question. But whenever I look at them, I want to rip them apart. The answers display a part of me, but they will never define me. I can tell you that I learn languages very quickly, that I can read body language in a way that i...

Once, when I was still in school, a representative from an NGO in Calcutta came to talk to us. He talked about the clothes we bought in sale for two Euros a piece, and about modern slavery, the indigo dye for Jeans and child labour. At the end of it all, when we were convinced that certain countries were drowning in poverty and we, the pupils, the people, the citizens of Germany and of the European Union, were actively supporting that crime, the man said: “But you don’t have to hel...

It is said that people born in winter are more likely to become depressed than people born in summer. Karlie, 18 years old, is born on October 1st: technically, that is still closer to summer than to winter. So, there are seasons of happiness and hope and strength for her. But then there are also seasons where she turns awfully depressed and sad. Quite a lot, to be honest. Depression, as bad as it sounds, is something you just can’t wipe away. Your brain literally refuses you to...

I am a European. I have received a very good education, I have succeeded in my A-levels, I can go to any University I want and study more than a human mind can imagine. And yet, I feel like I know so little of reality. As much as my school tried to teach me about algorithms, the structure of cells and poetry, I feel like it has denied me a certain knowledge or unconsciously told me only half of the truth. As Europeans, we are taught from the earliest childhood on that we are ve...

Imagine you are in a spacecraft, you know, one of those fancy white ones with triangular shaped wings and tinted windows. You are flying high above the earth and probably have just brewed your coffee. It tastes pretty different since your taste buds have changed in outer space. When you accidently let go off it, the cup turns faster than the brownish creamy fluid in it, but you can catch it easily. You have a day ahead that will be filled with experiments, but for now you sit w...

Yesterday, I had a talk with someone who, at times, I would call suicidal. He told me he was considering driving onto a tree, a fact which shattered me so badly I couldn’t sleep most of the night – given the fact that he had, at one point, after a simple “thanks”, turned off his phone and I didn’t know if he was still alive. He’s one of those gifted people, a great musician who lives for his passion only. He is, what comes with this a little lopsided lifestyle, extremely though...

I believe in equality. Equality in its absolute purest way. Because if we break it down to the basics, we cannot find a difference in us. Everyone of us is a human being. We are made of atoms which once were part of one giant earth ball - long before there was life. Every nuance - and every thought - comes from there. From atoms such as hydrogen, iron, carbonate, oxygen and nitrogen. That is what we are made of. Each and everyone of us. And everyone of us has a heart that p...

I'm sure that you all have heard those stories of homeless families in white tents, children working in cacao fields, villages fighting Ebola, communities not ever recovering from tsunamis and hungry people knowing nothing about spaghetti, pizza and sushi. I am sure you are confronted with those stories in the news, the magazines and the internet. And I am pretty certain that you have skipped those stories. The TV offers more entertaining shows than the news, the magazines insp...

Today I want to speak. I usually don’t like to speak, but let it be said what needs to be said. Today I want to speak about a truth that might sound like a betrayal to my fellow citizens. The truth might hurt some of you – but truth never has the intention to make you smile. In my country, Christmas is soon approaching. Everyone is extremely busy cleaning, wrapping, buying and eating in abundance. A recent survey has shown that most people in my country see Christmas as a...

Just another student whose home is "planet earth". I'm on my way to become a doctor and aspire to work with Doctors Without Borders one day. I like unconventional things, as long as they don't harm anyone. I often do the opposite of what the rest is doing, just to see if it works, too. I love music and writing and the VOY community!
