The letters dance.

They do incomprehensible things.

They jumble together, coexist together.

They mock me, they taunt me, for I cannot belong with them.

The words are of another world.

A world I have not yet travelled to.

They are beautiful and complex.

They hold meanings I fail to grasp.

I long to be a part of that world.

I long to understand the estranged pencil marks I see.

I long to create, I long to express.

I long to dance with the letters. I want to be their friends.

I dream to read, to write.

But it is only a dream.

According to Unicef, literacy rates have gone up by 8% in the last 20 years, but women still make up 59% of all illiterate youth.
Educating our youth will provide them opportunities that they could never have gotten before. It is up to us to provide them with the means to an education.
Literacy is not a luxury. it is a necessity and a right, and it is the path to a better world.
